once upon a time (sfx : DOOOOOOONGGG!!!),
when i studied in
Chonnam National University as an exchange student. i followed some competition
that held there. put it an example talent competition in GIST (Gwangju
Institute Science and Technology) and the other talent competition which held
in Gwangju International Day by GIC, Gwangju International
Community. all of these competition that i followed with my indonesian friends in CNU, is a performance of indonesian
dance. Saman Dance from Aceh Province. but well, we will talk about this later. i am speaking an English Essay Contest 2013 by Chonnam Tribune.
i, an international student which learn english as second language, am followed
this competition. just simple rule, make an essay within 4 hour in one day.
from 2 pm when the topic of essay being announced, to 6 pm (the last time
participant can send their essay to Chonnam Tribune). therefore i have huge
expectation in this competition, being optimism as always :D. so i send my
aplication to them and wait for the main day to start making an essay.
and the day i waited so long (not really,just 3 week apart when i send my application, but yeah so bored if you count every single day of it to the main day) comes, here are my essay that i made :
Digital Technology Spoiled Human’s Brain And No
Need For Human Improve Their Intellectual Power.
Something new. As great as vortex of
digital technology this century, will always bring up merit and demerit to
human race. It is like two sides of coin, inseverable. Same goes to digital
technology, cyberspace, and every single development in human’s history, it
always has advantage and disadvantage. One can be said, industrial revolution
in 1750-1850, for human it would be a great development, but for earth, as we
live on it, was quite an opposite. Polution, toxic, and acid rain, they
were created by human’s work afterall. And now, digital technology too has
another disadvantage, although it has made human’s convenience much better.
We have to think much deeper to make an
opinion. We can’t justify it from one side. People who live with such a
technologies has different point of view with people who were live by making
digital technology as his secondary tool.
But generally, technology has been
becoming inseparable thing in our life. Smartphone technology made an
incredible growth these years, one of them thanks to steve jobs and his
brilliant breakthrough with apple. And these development has made his way to
make human’s life easier. Put an example that we can do our job by holding one
smartphone. We can bring many books by bringing one Ipad without getting heavy.
All books in one technology. And it really help us, a student, and even many
human which relies his work on computer.
And now, technology has getting into
industry. By using digital technology, a worker can supervise many thing
without breaking a sweat. This is like revolution in industrial technology. By
network, we can do many improvement. I heard from one of my teacher in my home
university as an expert in industrial technology, that with network, everything
is possible. He make an equipment for calculate amount of water that fill in
some vessel. And by connecting it in network, not just an employee can see it,
even a director, who want to check how production goes will get such an
information. Just open one software in his smartphone and the value will shown.
More simple way, will make it more handy for them, example an employees that
want to explain production’s cultivation to their boss.
We talked technologies in industrials and
its advantages for education stuff. If we look it by medical’s perspective, no
doubt, digital technology firmly has his grip in medical equipment development.
This century people get astonished by nanorobot, not even count surgery robot.
But now we will not talk about the common technologies in medical equipment. We
will talk about the upcoming discovery in first aid treatment. “Preventing is
better than healing”, Many researcher and scientist, especially electric
engineering and network engineering, now focusing to make a tool for
investigate human’s body work. Put it simply heartbeat. If someone had some
accident, first thing to do is check his body. That’s why there are such as
“first aid for accident”, this is supposed to prevent a person get more fatal
wound. That’s why, nowadays, such as equipment is being created. we could know
someone’s heartbeat and blood pressure by looking at his smartphone. One of my
friend said, it is possible by making such a bracelet and connceting it to a
digital thing like smartphone. Combination medical research and computer
research. To collect some data, everything is could be connected by smartphone
now.
This indeed, a never ending topic. So
much thing you can do with these technologies improvement, but as I said in
first paragraph, technology is not different with another growth of human’s
creation, there would be red ink on it.
Now I will mention about a knife. Is it
bad? or good? The creator of knife has no sin to make such a tool. It depends
how you use it anyway. Whether it is for a good reason or not, same can be said
to digital technology. Don’t blame who create it, they has no fault utterly.
One that came clear about the derivation from an existence of digital
technology is from social perspective.
People these days has pampered by social
media improvement. Nowadays, people is not only can talk and send a message.
They even can talk with a live video, it is like they meet directly but can’t
touch each other. Send an expression for fun by their smartphone. Indeed, this
is so entrancing. But aside this joy, another impact has growth too, among
young generation. As example, kids these day prefer to chat with their friend
in social media than going outside to play with their real friend. In extreme
ways, just look at some entourage out there, there would be one or two person
that enjoying his phone rather than make some conversation. it was troublesome
if you really addicted with digital media, especially online game and social
media, and it could be dangerous if you ever can’t leave or shut down your
smartphone. It is not like that smartphone is so important for your live, but
it was indeed a superflous if you were being addicted by smartphone or that
similar with it.
People being introduced by a network technology a decade a go. A few years a
go, friendster and yahoomessenger begin the social media invasion. And now
blackberrymessenger, facebook, twitter, instagram, and many more has born to
provide an availibility of digital technology. I just mention a several social
media that many people addicted by it. even I didn’t mention an online game
product which has been becoming a place for uncountable people spending their
time. Whether human will loss their enjoyment together in the real world? or
such as pseudo life like jonathan mostow depicted in his movie “Surrogates”
will become human’s future?. It is up to human how this world would become.
Digital technologies will never stop growing. For many disadvantages which
created by human’s stubborn, it is like aside effect of the availability of
technology.
Finally, for conclusion of my opinion here, in this essay. Technologies has
nothing to do with human’s brain or even intellectual power. These technology
development is one thing, the degression of human’s race is another thing to be
solved. Knife will become an extraordinary tool in the hand of chef, but it
will become frightening tool in the hand of murderer. This relation and side
never stop to confuse human in using newest invention, that’s why we have a
regulation. Because what make us different to animal is ethics. Without ethics,
we will just become talking animal.
